Tebogo lives with hope

By Benet Monanyane

All that glitters is not gold, but by listening to his underground music you can associate him with your celebrated musos. This young man by the name of Tebogo “Mrapper” Nkomo (21) from Lethabong near Rustenburg, has turned a home bathroom in to a place where he spends almost the rest of his day pushing his long set dream of becoming a music star. Tebogo’s habit of causing noise and disturbance whenever his family wanted to use a bathroom for its exact purpose, was at first unwelcome by the family members.

Tebogo who has already recorded 274 songs from his bathroom cum music studio, says that his family members only gave him a room when they realized the talent he has after listening to some of his songs. Tebogo’s dream started when he was 13 in Grade 7 where he earned himself a name “Mrapper” from his friends, because of his passion in music. And after 8 years he is still working hard to live up to his nickname and unlike many young people he is positive about his future. “I won’t pressurize myself because of what some other people say about me being a “wanna be” I just do what I love for fun” Tebogo says. He usually borrows a six channel mixer from the local Deejays since he sold his in order to get a better mixer and microphone.

Mrapper’s music is now entertaining the Lethabong “party animals” at small gigs. His Homeboys who are hopeful about his music keeps on streaming into his home to be featured in some of his tracks. One of his friends from high school, Jeffrey Seakamela explains him as a believer. “Mrapper believes in his music dreams, you rarely see him around the streets and it’s good that he keeps himself away from bad life’. If fortune happens to be on his side, he won’t be the first person to be celebrated from Lethabong. He will be adding up to the national celebrated figures like a singing star, Ishmael Morabe. The children’s Rights ambassador cum singer Gabatshwane Gumede and not to forget the late Yvonne Phiri who played for the South African Netball Team.
